Great Smoky Mountains park reopens to happy campers

CHEROKEE, N.C. — The mountains are open again, and Kathy Latham is a happy woman.

Not that everything on the North Carolina-Tennessee border was closed. But Latham, who runs several stores in Cherokee near one of the entrances to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is hoping she can salvage fall foliage season now that North Carolina and Tennessee decided to pay the federal government to re-open the USA’s most visited national park.

“Maybe the next two weeks will pull us out,” she said.
