Homeless mom, newborn play roles of Mary and baby Jesus

Fearful that her abuser (now incarcerated) would find her, she eventually ran out of places to stay, and in desperation sought help from WNC Rescue Ministries, which contacted Sczudlo at Steadfast House.

“It was horrible,” Sczudlo said, tearing up at the memory. “When my staff and I thought about a woman who was eight and a half months pregnant, living on the streets in November, and about to give birth to a child with no one there to help her … we talked about it and said, yes, we have a long waiting list, but here was someone in dire need, and we decided we needed to bring her in.”

Goodlet, who grew up in foster care and has never known much stability in her life, arrived with nothing but a knapsack with one change of clothes, a few personal items, and nothing for her baby. When Sczudlo sent out a note to volunteers about the mother-to-be’s situation, “diapers, formula, clothes, everything came pouring into this house to take care of this child.”

“The women here have surrounded her with love and help and support, and she feels like this is home,” Sczudlo
