Haywood revives film commission

Haywood County is no stranger to the silver screen. It was a star in the blockbuster movie “Cold Mountain,” and will be there again when “Serena” comes out later this year. But neither of these place-based novels set in Haywood were actually filmed here — the production companies went overseas instead.

But Haywood’s tourism leaders aren’t giving up on the idea of turning the county into a film hotspot — not just for movies, but TV shows, reality shows, commericals, even catalog shoots.

They have revived the idea of a Haywood Film Commission, something that was around in the 1980s but had fizzled over the years.

“And we’re going to change that,” Seymour said.

Roll Camera

When a production company begins looking around for potential locations to film, whether it be a major motion picture, independent project, music video or commercial, there are three categories they address — location, support services and crew.

Location could be a bustling city or backwoods farm, where support services can encompass catering, engineers and makeup artists, while crew can be those with editing and marketing backgrounds. The possibilities are as endless as the positions that need to be filled when the cameras

Officers, board members elected to National Restaurant Association

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Restaurant Association and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation has announced the election of officers to its Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, respectively.

The officers began their one-year terms on Jan. 1, and recently led their first board meeting in Charleston, S.C. In addition, the National Restaurant Association has named several industry leaders to join its board.

“The National Restaurant Association Board of Directors and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Board of Trustees are instrumental to the continuing success of the industry and our members,” said Dawn Sweeney, president and CEO of the National Restaurant Association and the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, in a press release. “This year, our boards are fortunate to be led by industry veterans Ken Conrad and Mike Gibbons. Their leadership and expertise will provide valuable guidance as our industry navigates complex challenges in the year ahead.”

The NRA expects restaurants to add 1.3 million new positions in the next decade, pushing industry employment to 14.8 million by 2024. To support this growth, the NRA board consists of roughly 100 voting directors, representing every facet of the industry.

The 2014 officers are:

Chimney Rock access at Chimney Rock State Park will be closed beginning today for up to three weeks, weather permitting, as repairs are made to the main entrance road, according to the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation. This closure affects the Chimney Rock spire and its elevator access, the Outcroppings Trail and all other visitor facilities in the vicinity.

In May, a 75-foot section in one lane of the road collapsed during a period of heavy rainfall. A contractor will replace a retaining wall that supports the section of roadway near the park entrance. After a 21-day construction period, single-lane access to the park will be available as road repairs continue.

The park’s Rumbling Bald Climbing Access will remain open. For more information, call 828-277-9611 or visit chimneyrockpark.com.

Commissioners approve African-American Heritage Commission, water for CTS …

Tonight, the Buncombe County Commissioners had a varied agenda, their chambers bustling with groups of citizens there to make their feelings heard on matters ranging from heritage to economic growth.

The major item was the approval of the joint city-county African-American Heritage Commission. Asheville City Council gave their endorsement last month.

Marvin Chambers, one of the leaders of the effort and an activist in Asheville’s civil rights struggles, pointed out that many don’t know of the history of the area’s African-American community, a history he said is “beyond reproach” compared to any city in the state. Many stories, he emphasized, were passed down through families that were scattered in the “urban renewal” of the 1970s, making it more important than ever to protect that history for future generations.

Many other members of the effort and supporters from the public spoke, and organizations like the YMI, the NAACP, and the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources have all given their endorsements. The commission aims to help coordinate and support efforts to preserve and celebrate the area’s heritage. Other benefits the supporters mentioned included improved economic development, especially through
