Short Notice: Erika Jane & Remember the Bees at the Grey Eagle Tonight!

Erika Jane and Remember The Bees w/ Open WindowsIt’s short notice, I know, but I just found out about it and had to get it posted ASAP. One of my favorite bands, Erika Jane & Remember the Bees is playing at the Grey Eagle tonight with Pierce Edens & The Dirty Work. The show starts at 9PM and the tickets are $7 at the door. This looks to be a great show and I wish I could be there.

About Erika Jane & Remember the Bees:

Coming from the Colorado mountains, Erika Jane moved to Asheville in 2006. After recording her debut album, The Hill Creek Sessions (at lovely Hill Creek Studios), Erika Jane began playing shows around the Asheville area. Remember the Bees came together as a project in January of 2008. The driving bass drum, soulful guitar and thoughtful lyrics has intrigued a bit of local attention.

About Pierce Edens & The Dirty Work

Somewhere between the front porch and the garage, with a voice as strong as the lyrical content it is known to bellow, is Pierce Edens. With enough credentials to prove his status as both a leading songwriter and as a leading performer in the Southeast, the accolades still pile up from regional, national, and international reviews, critics, and fans. Receiving such praise as “a frenetic mix of rock-inspired carnival barker, part troubadour/part guitar-slinging vagrant” and “It would be easy to view Edens and company as a band to scuff your boots to, but if you listen a bit more closely, it quickly becomes evident that Edens is also a truly gifted songwriter.”

Grab Your Hat and Head Out to Dillsboro

Dillsboro Easter Hat ParadeEvery year around Easter, hundreds of participants don the craziest and most unique hats they can find and parade through the streets of Dillsboro, a great town less than an hour west of Asheville. Last year’s event drew more than 500 participants, and this year’s 22nd annual Easter Hat Parade looks to be just as big. If you’re looking for some family fun, then make your plans to head to Dillsboro on Saturday, April 3rd. The parade starts at 2:00 PM. Press release follows:

Old hat, new hat, yellow hat, blue hat. They’re all welcome at Dillsboro’s 22nd annual Easter Hat Parade on Saturday, April 3, at 2 p.m.

The parade, a Dillsboro tradition the Saturday before Easter, showcases a variety of interesting hats atop participants of all ages, including pets. Judges select the best hats in more than 20 categories, including: biggest, smallest, funniest, best-smelling, “poofy-est,” most creative, most spring-like and most outrageous.

In addition to an array of colorful hats, the parade features vintage cars provided by the Smoky Mountain Antique Car Club. The Easter Bunny will be there, arriving in antique convertible, while local magician Professor Wizbang will perform amazing tricks for the kids.

If your hat collection isn’t up to snuff, don’t worry. Hat-making takes place on the lawn of Dogwood Crafters.

Last year’s parade set a record with 500 participants, and organizers expect a larger turnout this year.

Although the Easter Hat Parade officially begins at 2 p.m., folks are encouraged to arrive early and spend the day. Dillsboro is a walkabout mountain village featuring many unique shops, arts & crafts studios, restaurants and inns.

Dillsboro is located on the Tuckasegee River at the crossroads of U.S. Hwy. 23/74 and U.S. Hwy 441 in Jackson County. The town is less than an hour west of Asheville, 1.5 hours from Gatlinburg, 2.5 hours from Atlanta and Spartanburg, and 3 hours from Charlotte and Knoxville.

For parade information call the Jackson County Visitors Center at (800) 962-1911, or go to www.visitdillsboro.org.

Scenes from GoogleAVL Town Hall Meeting

This is one of the huge welcoming signs for Go...
Image via Wikipedia

The Google Fiber Town Hall Meeting was held last night at the Asheville Civic Center Ballroom and the message was clear: Fill out your form. Each and every one of us needs to make sure we fill out a form nominating Asheville as a candidate for Google’s Fiber initiative. To do so, go to http://googleavl.com and click the button that says “Nominate Asheville”. But hurry, time’s running out.

What should you say on the form? The speakers addressed this last night.

Do say:

  • Tell Google why you believe Asheville is a good fit for their program.
  • Tell Google how you will use their Gigabit-per-second internet connection to do things you simply can’t do with a standard internet connection from AT&T or Charter.
  • Tell Google how it will let you innovate.

Don’t say:

  • Don’t tell them it’ll just let you do what you’re already doing only faster.
  • Don’t tell them it’ll let you download your porn straight into your brain at the speed of light (they didn’t cover this last night, but I thought it needed to be said).
  • Don’t tell them that it will “save” Asheville or be the root cause of a technological revolution that brings Asheville out of the dark ages. This simply isn’t true. Asheville is already in the midst of a technological revolution. Google’s Fiber will simply allow that to shift into overdrive and bring about real change to our community and the world.

Another overarching message of the night: Asheville doesn’t need to change our name to Google like some cities have done. Asheville deserves to be chosen based on our merits, on our real qualifications. What are those qualifications? The GoogleAVL site lists 18 good solid reasons.

Below: a few pics I snapped of the event.
