Asheville Stays Home- Skiers Flock to Slopes

This new round of snow that brought up to a foot in some areas and sub-freezing temperatures for the next few days has shut down some government agencies, many businesses, and almost all schools. Unlike other storms, people are staying home, leaving the streets clear of the numerous accidents that usually tie up emergency services.

In the eary hours of the storm, crews could not keep up with the continual snow, and they are thankful that people gave them room to work. The snow removal crews are putting in 84 hour work weeks with the harsh winter we’ve had so far.

Now, 240, I40, and I26 are mostly cleared, but it’s the secondary roads that are treacherous. Asheville says it hopes to get to the secondary roads by Tuesday afternoon.

News 13, WLOS, is reporting that all of the snow is good for the ski resorts- Wolf Ridge is reporting 75 inches of snow for the season and a packed house as skiers braved the elements for excellent skiing, snow boarding and tubing. Wolf Ridge is having its best season in 30 years. Cataloochee has 16 runs open and a great turnout as students and parents have time off.

With lots of snow, more on the way, and highs that don’t reach above freezing, the white is here to stay for a while. Get your camera for some wonderful photos of Asheville blanketed in white.

Being a mountain town, almost every neighborhood has a great hill. Feel like a kid again as you soar down the snowy incline.

Biltmore House- if you reserve online, 7 days in advance, your ticket is half off. For adults, it’s $29. Walk through the woods from the parking lot for a commanding view of the estate and the lawn, now white, leading up to the mansion. For a warmer entrance, take the shuttle bus.

Hiking in the snow covered woods is always a fun winter treat. There are various free trails, or visit the NC Arboretum, with changing displays in it’s 2 buildings.

Enjoy a drink at the Grove Park Inn in front of the huge roaring fireplace. During the day you’ll be able to see the snow covered golf course and the historic Kimberly neighborhood.

Enjoy a wide variety of hot chocolates, or for the ultimate in decadence, the heavy, coconut based cold sipping chocolate at the Chocolate Lounge, near Pack Square.

The skiing, snow boarding, tubing, and hot chocolate are all great at Wolf Laurel, a ski resort just 30 minutes from downtown Asheville.

The Haitian boys dance troupe, the Resurrection Dance Theater, will be performing at the Orange Peel on January 8, 2011. From the St. Joseph’s Home from Boys, which was destroyed in the earthquake, they are here to raise funds to rebuild their home.

The YMI Cultural Center and Asheville Youth Mission teamed up to bring them to Asheville. The Resurrection Dance Theater has performed all over the world.

The St. Joseph Home for Boys was started in 1985 by a missionary who had worked with Mother Teresa. He brought boys that had been living on the streets, and encouraged them to express themselves through dance and skits. The Resurrection Dance Theater is an outgrowth of that initial expression.
