Angelica Henry’s Career-High 32 Leads Chants Past Asheville
North Asheville, South Asheville, East Asheville, & West Asheville. From the top of downtown Asheville's tallest building, the centrally located BB&T Building, Wilcox World Travel and Tours brings you real-time, live streams of Pack Square, The Grove Park Inn, Westgate Bridge, The Asheville Tourists, Local Traffic, Pisgah Mountain and much more.
That film is considered a cult classic and has even been labeled the “ultimate drive-in movie.” However, if Mitchum’s character, Lucas Doolin, and his ’57 Ford could be transported 55 years into the future, he’d get a big surprise. He’d land in an Asheville where brewing (albeit of a different beverage) isn’t just OK, it’s become an industry whose products draw thirsty tourists from across the United States.
Beer is the beverage of choice in Asheville, and the claim by the city’s Convention and Visitors Bureau that it’s the “craft-brewing center of the Southeast” is not an overstatement.
In fact, for four years running, 2009 to 2012, Ashville either won or shared the title of “Beer City USA” in an online poll conducted by Charlie Lapazinion, beer examiner of Examiner.com. The methodology may have been unscientific, but the numbers don’t lie.
According to the Convention and Visitors Bureau, there are 16 craft breweries in Ashville proper — one per roughly 5,200 residents, according to 2010 Census figures, the highest per capita figure in the U.S. — and others in Buncombe County, where the city lies. Pop into a brewpub, bar or taproom (and there are plenty) on a given day, and you’ll be

Asheville Police Department Lt. Mark Byrd, claiming the city of Asheville’s management and the APD’s leadership retaliated and discriminated against him on a number of occasions, including when his wife filed a sexual harassment suit, filed a lawsuit in federal court Jan. 21.
The lawsuit alleges that in its treatment of Byrd and other dissenting officers, the APD has “engaged in discrimination, retaliation, intimidation, and the use of falsehoods.” According to the suit, Byrd

Still, some folks prefer a more urban getaway, or a little variety after fishing, golfing, hiking, kayaking, mountain climbing, wildlife watching or zip-lining. That’s helped the region’s largest city, Asheville (population 84,458 as of 2011), once again become a popular Southern destination.
“Once again” comes into play because the city had that status from the latter years of the 19th century through the Roaring Twenties.
The construction of George Vanderbilt’s enormous, ornate Biltmore Estate (which remains Asheville’s and North Carolina’s No. 1 tourist attraction) helped trigger an economic boom in the city that made it a “place to be,” whether to live or visit and play, for the nation’s elite.
Downtown construction was done in a unique Art Deco look. Housing developments flourished and luxury resorts were built to accommodate visitors such as Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, President Calvin Coolidge and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald (Zelda died in Asheville).
However, the Great Depression ravaged Asheville and its economy. The city had the highest per capita debt in the U.S. and spent more than four decades paying it off. Because of that, it had no resources to commit to urban renewal — tearing down old buildings to put up new — and today’s tourists

Bears are finding it so unseasonably warm in the Sierra Nevada mountain range this winter that many of them are forgoing hibernation in favor of foraging through garbage, bringing them closer to humans and spelling out trouble for the food chain.
Bears in the Lake Tahoe, Yosemite and beyond usually spend December through March napping in caves, but residents and visitors have noticed an increase in bear activity typical of summer months. With temperatures 10 degrees above normal accompanying the California drought, bears have found little reason to hibernate — especially when there is plentiful food in the Lake Tahoe region.
“In this weather, you’re going to see more of them,” Chris Healy of the Nevada Department of Wildlife told the San Francisco Chronicle. “They’re totally content to hibernate, but if the food’s available, they’ll get up and eat.”
The troubling phenomenon has been apparent to residents of the Sierras, where last week’s snowpack measured just 17 percent of normal.
“The local bears are coming out of hibernation three months early!” Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters Guide Service wrote. “I have been forced for the first time in nearly 20 years here to water my
