Grady the Groundhog, animal ambassador for Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park, will be making his annual winter prediction at noon on Sunday, February 2 behind the Old Rock Café in Chimney Rock Village, next to the park entrance. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting, the public is invited to a free wildlife program to learn quirky things about groundhogs and the Groundhog Day tradition and participate in kids’ crafts.
Around noon Grady the Groundhog will awaken from his winter slumber to see if his shadow appears, which would signal six more weeks of winter. But if there’s no shadow, then spring should be around the corner. Grady outwitted Punxsutawney Phil to predict the weather correctly last year, and Park staff are anticipating another accurate prediction. Drop in at the Old Rock Café for a lunch special of Grady’s favorite soup and other groundhog-themed menu items.

Aiken Young Professionals – or AYP – will host its annual third Thursday membership open house on Thursday for new and old members.
From 6 to 8 p.m., members of the community between the ages of 22 and 39 are welcome to learn about the group and its many opportunities such as community outreach, networking and membership.
The event will be held at the Aiken Visitors Center and Train Depot, 406 Park Ave.
“This is a free event where folks can come to a networking type of event and have an opportunity to meet our committee chairs and learn about what each committee is doing,” Derrick McLane, steering committee chairperson for 2014, said. “This gives everyone an opportunity to find out more about AYP and potentially become members.”
AYP hosts more than 30 networking events – such as social hours, family outings and special events – during the year and has hosted professional development events regarding public speaking and personal wealth management.
During January and February, AYP is offering a reduced membership for $35. Individual member benefits include the opportunity to meet more than 250 young professionals in the Aiken area,
