Long legacy of Asheville’s Jackie and Fred Simms

The four parents conspired to arrange a seemingly innocent gathering at Jackie’s family’s home — the young people socializing in one room while the elders chatted in another, stealthily eavesdropping when they could.

Gwen Morphis, Jackie’s best friend since they were 6 and 8, respectively, recalls Jackie being her typical ebullient self during that gathering, animated and laughing as she sported her new dress, while Fred was his usual “stoic” self, quiet and observant.

Someone in the room, who was aware of the parents’ plan, looked at the seemingly unlikely pair and said something like, “Are you kidding me?” Morphis said. “And when someone asked him afterward what he thought (of Jackie), his comment was, ‘Well, she smiles a lot and has nice legs.’”

When Fred finished his military service, he came back to St. Louis to find Jackie, and that was that. “He just didn’t have a choice,” Morphis said.

Their long union had its challenges, as Jackie cheerfully admits that “Fred was not the easiest person to live with, and I’m sure he would say the same about me. Couples counseling off and on throughout the years was a staple,

Animal Welfare Institute plans lawsuit over red wolf deaths

To Whom It May Concern:

On October 29 2012 and you did stories on the red wolves being found shot dead in North Carolina (by Jake Frankel). There is a hearing on the next step of this campaign on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 in case you are interested for Mountain Express: We are suing the North Carolina state wildlife agency for authorizing day and night hunting in the red wolf’s recovery area of an identical looking animal – coyotes – and hence violating the Endangered Species Act, which the red wolf is listed under. Again, the hearing on our injunction is this coming Tuesday, February 11, 2014. I have included below a list of facts about this red wolf population, and I am happy to send you anything else you need – a press release, mortality statistics, court documents, etc.:

-The red wolf (Canis rufus) once ranged throughout the eastern and southcentral United States. Intensive predator control programs and the degradation and alteration of the species’ habitat had greatly reduced its numbers by the early 20th Century, however. Designated as an endangered species in 1967, the red wolf was declared extinct in the wild in 1980. In 1987, an

Q&A: Weather weary nation asks why such a nasty winter

WASHINGTON — Cold and snow keep battering the Midwest and East, and even Atlanta was temporarily paralyzed. California has been bone dry. Alaska set heat records.

The wild winter somehow became even more wicked Thursday morning when the national average temperature plunged to a brutal 11 degrees _ the lowest temperature of a season of extremes

A weather weary nation asks a simple question: Why?

The answer is the jet stream, the river of air that dictates our weather. Normally the jet stream stays in Canada or the northern U.S., going west to east in a somewhat straight line. But this winter it has plunged south, creating high pressure ridges and low pressure troughs and taking cold polar air south and east and leaving warm, dry weather to the west.

“We are having an unusual jet stream that’s giving us crazy cold weather in the East and the ridiculously resilient ridge as it’s called in California,” said Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters.

Q: Why is the jet stream doing this?

A: There are three different forces probably at work here, but scientists still need to do more research, said Derek Arndt, of the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. One is just the random natural
