MPAC 4th of July WNC Block Party

MPAC (Multi Purpose Athletic Complex) has announced a huge lineup for their 4th of July WNC Block Party, to be held on Sunday, July 4th at the North Buncombe High School soccer practice field. The price of admission is an ultra-affordable zero dollars and the event will be taking place from noon to 10 PM. Looking at the musical lineup alone it seems like it is going to be a huge event, but they’re throwing in lots of other stuff like sports demos, a songwriter area, a storytelling area, fashion, food (reason enough to go right there) and they’re recommending you to bring your own instrument for a “pickin’ party”.

MPAC has a fabulous musical lineup with Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Afromotive, Galen Kipar, Chris O’Neill with Jay Sanders & Billy Cardine, Richard Shulmann,The Red Hot Sugar Babies, Buyaka, Dave Wendelin, the Traveling Bonfires and others tba.There will also be a plethora of performing arts including The Asheville Puppetry Alliance, Asheville Hula Dancers, The AVL Aerial Artists, the Blue Ridge Roller girls and many others.

Also, get a sneak peak fashion preview, “A Taste of PUSH Asheville Fashion Runway Show” for the Fourth of JUly in advance of the PUSH Asheville Fashion Runway Show Benefit for MPAC that will take place on Friday, July 16, 2010 at the Orange Peel.

Also keeping with the MPAC mission there will also be sports demos going on all day in the soccer field adjacent to the stage. Look out for the Weaverville Futbol Club, the Madison and Yancey Counties Youth Soccer teams, Asheville Rugby, Asheville Lacrosse, and High Flight Gymnastics amongst others.

And what Fourth of July festivities would be without Patriotic and Civic activities? MPAC has invited the NBHS ROTC Color Guard and WNC Civil Air Patrol Color Guard.

Downtown After Five Kicks Off Tonight, May 21

Downtown After Five 2010

Your favorite downtown summer festival series kicks off again tonight with performers Jennie Arnau and StephaniesID, benefiting the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign. Food and drinks are available on site. The party starts at 5:00pm (natch) under the I-240 bridge on South Lexington Avenue downtown. This is the 22nd year for the popular street festival.

Dehlia Low at the Grey Eagle May 28th

Break out your pencil and calendar and make a note: Dehlia Low is scheduled to play the Grey Eagle on Friday, May 28. They recently played MerleFest where they were well received. The video above is from an upcoming feature on “Jammin’ at Hippie Jack’s”, which is going out on PBS.

Emerging out of Asheville, North Carolina’s roots renaissance, Dehlia Low echoes the sounds of early country with a strong bluegrass flavor, crafting a fresh originality that feels like home.

Since August of 2007, the group has quickly developed a devoted fan base with the help of their self-titled EP, receiving national and international reviews and radio play. A fan stated, “I saw your show and just wanted to let you know that it was probably one of my favorite experiences at Merlefest. Both vocals were amazing, the mandolin playing had me in awe and the dobro playing gave me chills. On the way home my friend and I were kicking ourselves for not buying your album at the festival but I’m glad to find you guys on itunes!”

Just in their second year, Dehlia Low performed at thirteen festivals in 2009. Some of the bigger ones were Appalachian Uprising, Durango Meltdown, Pick-A-Thon, and Bristol Rhythm & Roots.

One-Stop Early Voting Begins April 15

Primary elections are just around the corner, May 4th to be exact. AshevilleLiveCam.com is a big proponent of the notion that everyone who can vote should vote. Even primary elections are of great importance, since they determine who will be on the final ballot on Election Day in November. For those of you who are “too busy” to vote in the primary election on May 4th, your excuses are dwindling. One-Stop Early Voting opens April 15th and runs through May 1st. If you’re not yet registered to vote, you can also take care of that at the same time, making it worthy of the name “One-Stop”. This is an easy way to avoid the lines, vote on your schedule and make sure your voice is heard.

If you need to know who and what you will be voting for, go to http://www.sboe.state.nc.us/VoterLookup.aspx?Feature=voterinfo and enter your information in the form. After submitting, click on the link that says “My Sample Ballot”. You will get a PDF file showing you what your particular ballot is going to look like. The Mountain Xpress should be publishing their candidate issue on April 21st.

Starting April 15th, you can vote at the Buncombe County Training Center at 199 College St. in Asheville. The following locations will open for One-Stop Early Voting on April 17th:

  • Black Mountain Branch Library – 105 N. Dougherty St, Black Mountain
  • South Buncombe Branch Library – 260 Overlook Rd, Asheville
  • Fairview Branch Library – 11 Taylor Rd, Fairview
  • West Asheville Branch Library – 942 Haywood Rd, Asheville
  • Leicester Branch Library – 1561 Alexander Rd, Leicester
  • Parks, Rec. & Cultural Arts Dept. Bldg. – 70 Gashes Creek Rd, Asheville
  • Jupiter Fire Department – 331 Jupiter Rd, Weaverville
