Schools gets state tourism post; looks forward to good year ahead

RALEIGH — Emerald Isle Mayor Art Schools doesn’t plan to use his latest government position to directly promote the Crystal Coast, but hopes that he will still be able to draw tourists to the area by association.

Gov. Pat McCrory recently appointed Mr. Schools to the N.C. Travel and Tourism Board.  This advisory board has no solid authority to make decisions at the state level, but rather will help give input on different tourism campaigns that will be used to draw people to North Carolina as a whole.

Mr. Schools believes it will be a good year for tourism along the Crystal Coast and throughout

Some of you are aware I come from a family of historians so do not be surprised if occasionally I begin my newsletter with a history lesson. A few weeks ago I provided a brief history as we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the NC Legislative Building on Jones Street, where we currently conduct the people’s business. Where did the legislature meet prior to that? Prior to 1963, the legislature met at the North Carolina State Capitol, located on Capitol Square in downtown Raleigh. The Old State Capitol was built in 1840 and is one of our nation’s most intact examples of a Greek revival public building.

This week we met at the State Capitol for an historic reason — to recognize and display NC’s copy of the Bill of Rights. President George Washington commissioned 14 copies of the US Bill of Rights after it was signed in 1789. Each of the thirteen colonies received one copy and one remained with the federal government. North Carolina’s copy

New tourism pitches unveiled in time for spring

In Western North Carolina, the natural landscape is an obvious and principl piece of tourism marketing campaigns. But tourism agencies have to ask themselves, “What makes their county different from others?”

During the winter, county tourism agencies have been prepping their new taglines for debut in April advertising — just as tourism season is gearing up.

The Haywood County Tourism Development Authority will premiere a new marketing campaign centered on the tagline “Fresh from the N.C. Smokies,” which will be featured in each ad.

The advertising strategy focuses on unique items found and made in Haywood County, including dulcimers, trout and a quilt trail — playing up a homegrown, homemade feel.

“They are trying to be true to who they are,” said Jay Sokolow, an account executive with The Tombras Group, a Knoxville-based advertising agency. “That’s important in any business.”

Haywood’s tourism agency has contracted with The Tombras Group for about seven years to design ads that appear in magazines from Our State to Southern Living to Smoky Mountain Living, on billboards and as banner ads on different websites. They developed a slate of magazine ad ideas with the new “Fresh from the N.C. Smokies” slogan, which was recently unveiled to the tourism board.

GREENSBORO – Tourism generates an estimated $18 billion a year for North Carolina’s economy. Representatives from the state commerce department’s division of tourism were in Greensboro, Thursday to help owners of local hotels, restaurants and attractions maximize their tourism potential.

The tourism resource assistance center was a one-stop source of information on how to partner with the division to attract more visitors and earn more of the tourism dollar.

“Everyone in the state that’s a tourism business gets a free listing on visitnc.com, which is our Internet site but you can also do cooperative advertising with us,” said Wit Tuttell, director of tourism marketing.

Filming tops talks at N.C. Governor’s tourism conference

For those in other parts of the state who aren’t familiar with the ins and outs of movie shoots, meeting the demands of the film industry is worthwhile, Wilmington Regional Film Commission Director Johnny Griffin told a group of tourism leaders from across North Carolina at the Wilmington Convention Center on Monday.

Movie and TV shoots can go on longer than anticipated or involve special effects like explosions or fireworks in residential areas, a lesson Southport officials learned all too well this past summer during the filming of the Nicholas Sparks adaptation “Safe Haven.”

“It can be difficult to work with the film industry, but you have to look at the long term,” he said. “Hopefully the exposure will make those experiences more tolerable.”

With those sleepless nights along its Yacht basin mostly a distant memory, Southport officials are back to work answering questions and drafting film permits for crews with “Under the Dome,” a local series set to

WILMINGTON — The North Carolina Governor’s Conference on Tourism continued at the Wilmington Convention Center Monday, with discussions on how legislative decisions impact the state’s tourism industry.

Every year the Tar Heel state draws vacationers from around the world. Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker shared what she feels travel and tourist professionals need to do to continue to bring vacationers to our state.

“We have so much to offer. If you’re a mountain person, if you’re a river person, if you’re an ocean person, if you’re a golf person, we have some of everything. So, there’s no reason why somebody should come to North
