GWU roundup: Men’s soccer, volleyball, cross country

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Ele Margelos scored the golden goal off a rebound from a Shelby Hooe shot attempt, and Gardner-Webb’s defense pitched a shutout for the final 90 minutes in a 2-1 double overtime win against Francis Marion on Sunday.

The victory capped GWU’s weekend at South Carolina State’s Bulldog/Sleep Inn Tournament

The goal marks the first of the season for Margelos.

Hooe (Mechanicsville, Va.) also had a hand in giving GWU the lead early. At the four-minute mark of the first half, the sophomore striker found the back of the net off an assist from redshirt junior Meagan Reynolds.

Francis Marion tied it in the 13th minute on an Elizabeth Asare goal.

Amy Schmitt had two saves for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb (1-2-1) hosts Wofford at 2 p.m. Sunday.

 

GWU men suffer first loss The Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, against host Georgia Southern at the Big South/SoCon Challenge on Sunday.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs saw a 1-0 first-half lead evaporate in the defeat.

GWU forward Denzel Clarke scored his fourth goal of the season in the 30th minute to put the visitors on top. But Georgia Southern’s Eric Dinka tied the match in the 36th minute, while
