Wilcox Travel’s Office Building Get’s New Partnership

BB&T Building Owners Partner with McKibbon Hotel Group Redeveloped, Mixed-use Property to Include Upscale Boutique Hotel

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (August 12, 2013) – Tower Associates Inc., owner of the BB&T Building, has formed a partnership with the McKibbon Hotel Group to redevelop the city’s tallest building from commercial office space to a mixed-use development that will include an upscale boutique hotel, according to Tower Associates Chairman of the Board Glenn W. Wilcox Sr. and McKibbon Hotel Group Chairman John McKibbon.

Properties included in the new partnership, MHG-Tower LLC include the 17-story BB&T Building and the associated parking garage at the corner of College and Broadway Streets. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.

Glenn W. Wilcox Sr.’s company Wilcox Travel was one of the first tenants when the building opened in 1965 as the Northwestern Bank Building, and Wilcox has been in the building continually for 48 years.

“I moved to Asheville from Boone in September 1965, the same month that what is now the BB&T Building opened. I’m pleased to be partnering with John McKibbon on this exciting project. I have great respect for John and am looking forward to working with a man of such proven integrity,” Wilcox said.

“I‘m honored and pleased to have the opportunity to redevelop downtown Asheville’s iconic high-rise, and partnering with the Wilcox family makes it all the more special. We have enjoyed building and managing hotels in Asheville for nearly 20 years, and we look forward to starting our next project in this landmark location,” McKibbon said.

MHG-Tower LLC will be working with the City of Asheville on the planning and approval process. More details on the project will be released as they become available.

Crooked Road dropping pursuit of National Heritage Area designation

ABINGDON — Crooked Road officials announced Thursday afternoon that the non-profit organization is dropping its pursuit of a National Heritage Area designation for Southwest Virginia due to growing opposition.

Crooked Road officials said the decision was made because the designation had become divisive and failed to unify “the entire region”.

“The Crooked Road believes it can best serve the region in the role of a unifying entity,” Hinshelwood said. “Although a significant number of localities have supported it, the proposed Crooked Road National Heritage Area designation has not unified the entire region.”

Opposition to the designation has been growing in recent months after local Tea Party groups began expressing concerns about how property rights would be impacted if the NHA was approved by Congress.

Oppenents say the NHA designation would effectively put the counties involved under the jurisdiction of the National Parks Service and Department of Interior.

On Nov. 20, 1930 the Central Bank and Trust Company closed its doors. Financial ruin fell upon the city. Asheville retained the highest per capita debt of any city in the country. While many cities chose to default on their loan Asheville city swore to pay back every cent which it finally did in 1977.

In 1828 a road following the French Broad River was completed to Tennessee, which brought wagons and herds moving through town. The Asheville and Greenville Plank Road was built in 1851, and the wealthy aboard four and six horse stages began to come to Asheville as a health resort.

During the Civil War, out of the ten companies of North Carolina Regiment seven of them were Buncombe county men. The Buncombe Rifles marched forth on April 18, 1861 with a flag made of silk dresses of the ladies of the town. Captain Zebulon Vance organized the Rough and Ready Guards.
