The Freedom Ball

Tomorrow, April 1, the Grey Eagle will be hosting the annual Freedom Ball. The event is from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM and costs $12. The ball is put on every year to benefit Glen Edward Chapman, who was exonerated and released from Death Row 2 years ago.

Glen Edward Chapman was sentenced to death for two 1992 murders, but he walked out of prison on April 2, 2008, a free man after Catawba County authorities dropped all charges against him. Chapman was convicted in 1994 of the murders of Betty Jean Ramseur and Tenene Yvette Conley in Hickory. A judge granted him a new trial in late 2007 after learning that detectives in the case had withheld and covered up evidence that pointed to Chapman’s innocence and that one investigator had perjured himself at Chapman

Reggae fans get ready… The Pisgah Brewing Company will be playing host to Everton Blender this Saturday, April 3 starting at 7:00 PM.

One of the few Jamaican singers to truly bridge the gap between the roots and dancehall reggae styles is the man known as Everton “Blender.” When reggae fans hear the opening notes of “Lift Up Your Head,” “Ghetto People Song,” “Blend Dem,” etc., they instantly recognize these songs as the cultural anthems of our time. The large number of hits Everton has accrued is most impressive for an artist who has been in the business for such a seemingly short period of time. But like many of Jamaica’s biggest musical stars, the road to fame wasn’t a short or easy one.

Volunteer For The Annual Great Asheville-Buncombe Cleanup

Asheville GreenWorksAsheville GreenWorks will be holding their annual Great Asheville-Buncombe Cleanup during the month of April. If you want to volunteer or need more information, contact info is included in the press release below. This is a great opportunity for each of us to help make a better, cleaner Asheville, so make some time in your schedule to join in on one of the events.

Asheville GreenWorks is seeking groups, businesses and individuals to volunteer for their big annual spring push for a more attractive community, the Great Asheville-Buncombe Cleanup.
The event consists of special clean-up programs at various locations throughout the county during the month of April. To make a difference, hundreds of volunteers are needed. Volunteers can sign up anytime as individuals or groups, although logistical details will not be available until March 2010. For more information, call 254-1776 or email volunteer@ashevillegreenworks.org.

April 3rd 10am-1pm Everything Up Litter Cleanup
Kickoff event at Pritchard Park with an Asheville GreenWorks sponsored downtown cleanup. Neighborhoods can register ahead of time to get help with recruiting volunteers and pick up supplies early, or can pick up at Pritchard Park. Cleanup supplies include gloves, vests, trash & recycling bags, and pickers for some groups. The goal is: everything up! Asheville GreenWorks also arranges for bag pickup with the City.

David Holt and the Lightning Bolts at Diana Wortham Theater

David Holt at Bele ChereDavid Holt and the Lightning Bolts will be playing at the Diana Wortham Theater, Saturday, March 27, at 8 PM. With college degrees in biology, art and elementary education, you might not be surprised to find that David Holt, 4 time Grammy winner, is a modern Renaissance Man. He plays 15 instruments, including the paper bag, and is known as a storyteller, historian, and entertainer. He founded the Appalachian Music Program at Warren Wilson College, and has traveled the world for the US State Department as a musical ambassador. He and his band will be a treat to listen to Saturday night with, among other things, a good selection of the old fashioned banjo, his favorite instrument.

Short Notice: Erika Jane & Remember the Bees at the Grey Eagle Tonight!

Erika Jane and Remember The Bees w/ Open WindowsIt’s short notice, I know, but I just found out about it and had to get it posted ASAP. One of my favorite bands, Erika Jane & Remember the Bees is playing at the Grey Eagle tonight with Pierce Edens & The Dirty Work. The show starts at 9PM and the tickets are $7 at the door. This looks to be a great show and I wish I could be there.

About Erika Jane & Remember the Bees:

Coming from the Colorado mountains, Erika Jane moved to Asheville in 2006. After recording her debut album, The Hill Creek Sessions (at lovely Hill Creek Studios), Erika Jane began playing shows around the Asheville area. Remember the Bees came together as a project in January of 2008. The driving bass drum, soulful guitar and thoughtful lyrics has intrigued a bit of local attention.

Google Moment Today at 1:30pm

If you haven’t already nominated Asheville for the Google Fiber initiative, wait just a little bit longer. Today at 1:30 PM will officially be the “right time” to submit your nomination. Asheville City Council passed a resolution creating the “Google Moment” and is encouraging everyone to submit your applications for Asheville at the same time.
